DREAMers

Since taking office, President Trump has made good on his promise to crack down on illegal immigration in the United States. Recently the President made a list of demands as a compromise for allowing ‘dreamers’ to remain in the country.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program began under President Obama and helped to put children who were brought into the country illegally not under their volition on the path to American legal citizenship. Recipients of the program, known as ‘Dreamers’ are unhappy with Trump’s latest rhetoric and demands that will allow them to remain in the United States.

Some of Trump’s demands include a border wall, cutoffs or curbing of federal dollars to so-called “sanctuary cities,” and getting tougher on minors coming over the border from South America.

With the fate of DACA in the air so is the fate of 17,000 Coloradans and they don’t like seeing their lives playing out in a political chess match. “I find it very disheartening that my community is being used as a bargaining chip,” said Mateo Lozano, a Colorado DACA recipient.

Lozano came to the United States from Columbia illegally as a child, but in Lozano’s mind, he has always been an American. Lozano has been calling on congressional officials to turn down Trump’s demands. “I as a DACA recipient do not wish to accept this debacle of a DREAM Act,” Lozano said.

Congressional democrats have already made it clear that they won’t accept the conditions and have called them a ‘nonstarter.’ On the other side, conservative Colorado gubernatorial candidate and former co-chairman of Trump’s Denver campaign believes Trump supporters must see some give in border security or immigration to allow the DACA program to continue.

“We just can’t let people pass through our country, without knowing what they are all about,” Barlock said.

How do you feel about Trump’s negotiating terms and the response from DACA recipients? Do you feel like Dreamers are being treated unfairly and deserve to stay or do you believe those who’ve come into the country illegally should not be allowed to remain regardless of their age?
